But the better cause and their natural alertness aided the Goths. In a battle at the river Phasis whence come the birds called pheasants, which are found in abundance at the banquets of the great all over the world Tanausis, king of the Goths, met Vesosis, king of the Egyptians, and there inflicted a severe defeat upon him, pursuing him even to Egypt.

Under Theodemirthe Ostrogoths broke away from Hunnic rule following the Battle of Nedao inand decisively defeated the Huns again under Valamir at Bassianae in While they were largely assimilated, their Gothic origin was still well-known: All Germans, Goths and Dacians are shown with curly hair and beard.

The aforesaid race of which I speak is known to have had Filimer as king, while they remained in their first home in Scythia near the Sea of Asov. This has become clearly known to men of inquiring mind, even to such as desired to write about it.

But soon Visimar himself, the king of the Vandals, was overthrown, together with the greater part of his people. The Goths were divided during this tumultuous period of time into two major branches, namely the Visigoths (also known as the ‘West Goths’, who settled much of modern day Romania during the 2nd century AD), and the Ostrogoths (also known as the ‘East Goths’, who settled far eastward on the Black Sea coast in modern day Ukraine).
